Golf Club Buying Guide

So, there are a lot of golf clubs to deal with. In order to help you make the best buying decisions, we've put together an in-depth buying guide for the major types of golf clubs, whether you're shopping for a golf club set online or in-store.

Golf Drivers

The golf driver plays an integral part in your ability to get as much distance from the tee. We have models that can take you where you need to go quickly and accurately so you can unleash mighty drives on the green.

Golf Irons

Irons are multi-purpose clubs that can be used for multiple shots on the course. Whether you need forgiveness or accuracy, our irons will fit your level.

Golf Putters

Golf putters are essential for hitting those big shots onto the fairway. We carry putters with a mix of stability and feel to optimize your short game.

Fairway Woods

From the tee and fairway, fairway woods are very distant and accurate. We’ve got a range of new designs that make them playable and help to build confidence.

Golf Wedges

Short gameplay requires golf wedges. From spin control to versatility on the greens, our wedges can help you find a way in any lie.

Golf Hybrids

Golf hybrids are a combination of woods and irons that are perfect for all conditions on the course. Our hybrids, designed for the game-minded golfer, feature forgiveness and distance.

Advice from an Expert

Golf Drivers

Golf drivers are the key to great distance and ball flight off the tee. At Embers Golf, we carry all sorts of drivers with standard, midsize, and oversized clubheads made from modern alloys such as titanium and aluminum. Because drivers are the longest clubs you’ll own, they’re often at the lowest loft angle, which is important to use when making your first shots.

New drivers have wider sweet spots for increased stability and strength at impact. They also have different lofts, usually between 8 and 15 degrees for men and 10 to 15 degrees for women, enabling you to adjust your performance depending on your swing type.

Fairway Woods

Fairway Woods are extremely versatile clubs that can be played off the fairway and from an ideal stance in the rough. Many golfers prefer to play fairway woods from the tee as well. Higher than drivers, these clubs have a flatter face that improves directionality. Fairway woods are usually constructed of lightweight graphite that can travel a lot of distance depending on your play and clubhead speed. Here’s what you should see for typical distances:

3-wood: 125 - 240 yards

4-wood: 110 - 220 yards

5-wood: 105 - 215 yards

7-wood: 90 - 170 yards

Irons

Irons are primarily used for shots exceeding 200 yards. A traditional iron set usually consists of eight clubs, ranging from three to nine irons, along with a pitching wedge. With features like a low profile, wide sole, and lower center of gravity, our irons are designed for exceptional playability.

The distance you achieve with your irons will depend on factors such as clubhead speed and skill level. Here are some average distances you can anticipate:

  • 2-iron: 105 - 210 yards

  • 3-iron: 100 - 205 yards

  • 4-iron: 90 - 190 yards

  • 5-iron: 80 - 175 yards

  • 6-iron: 70 - 165 yards

  • 7-iron: 65 - 155 yards

  • 8-iron: 60 - 145 yards

  • 9-iron: 55 - 135 yards

You can choose from various types of irons, including game-improvement irons, player irons, and driving irons.

Putters

Putters vary from style to style. The blade putters are slim and flat, and have a great touch of the ball. Large, rounded heads in the mallet putters ensure stability of shot. Alignment putters include geometric aids that assist with aiming to the target line, while counterbalanced putters are designed with extra weight inside the shaft to provide extra stability and control. Weight distribution also gives larger sweet spots for greater forgiveness in the perimeter-weighted putters. Insert putters use composite materials to produce softer and better strikes.

Wedges

Wedges are specialized irons designed with high loft angles to produce high-trajectory shots at lower distances. Common types include:

  • Pitching Wedge: Offers more distance with the lowest loft angle.

  • Sand Wedge: Specifically crafted to help get the ball out of bunkers.

  • Lob Wedge: Features the highest loft among wedges, ideal for clearing tall obstacles quickly.

  • Gap Wedge: Bridges the distance between pitching and sand wedges with slightly more loft than a standard pitching wedge.

Hybrid Golf Clubs

Hybrid clubs combine features of both woods and irons, offering a wider head than an iron but smaller than a wood. They are designed to be easier to hit than traditional drivers and can be effective from both the fairway and rough. Hybrids provide golfers with more versatility and forgiveness compared to long irons, making them an excellent addition to any golf bag.

Why Do Golf Balls Have Dimples?
